Hallmark ID Help of a Letter Opener with Magnifying Glass

Post by GGCallie »

I've image searched this and it comes up frequently as Cartier but the hallmark is very worn. I thought I might reach out to see if anyone can shed some light on this item. Cheers.

How long this item. 614 apparently goes with the 9" model. May 615 is a different length? Just a thought.

The information was gleaned from google images and eBay. But it looks like for now there's no good explanation for your number being 615 and other examples being 614.

Might check blade width..614 is 2 1/2". Note #5 is out of register with 61...stamp broke, change of stamp, fake? Cartier places name in full & centered...looks like you have a "C" shaped letter begining just above the center of "STERLING"...might look closer to see if that is correct, which might be a problem unless they have placed an abrreviated mark (????).

The other issue is that Cartier never made silver items such as this, they merely retailed it. They also usually didn't have exclusive rights to the designs they used so unless it clearly states Cartier you can't really even attribute it to Cartier. When this was made Cartier had a lot of their silver items made by Currier & Roby and parts of the mark look like theirs.
