Salt & Pepper Shakers, Sterling, 1804 PICS WORK NOW

Post by Russ A »

I couldn't get a decent pic of the bottom of the piece but it is just as I've drawn here (click the pic for a full size view) Inside the V are a C and an A.

This is the best I could get of the bottom: (warning-hi-res pic)Image
Here are the shakers:Image

There is also a very lightly hand drawn mark on one of the pieces just above where it is marked STERLING which can only be seen with a magnifying glass with the light reflecting just so. It reads:
10 (stylized J or possibly a British pound symbol) 1894 (some sort of Z looking symbol with a line thru it). Looks kind of like 10 J 1894 Z

My wife and I were given this set a number of years ago by my fathers 3rd wife. (cut - admin edit) Any help would be appreciated.

Edit to add that the hallmark looks a lot like the Geo.L.Vose Mfg Co mark but the date on the shakers is 100 years earlier than the one shown for Vose Mfg.

LetMeHost.com is the simplest way to do pictures I've ever seen!

Your shakers are by Clarence A. Vanderbilt, New York, NY. They were active between 1909 and 1935. The number "1804" on you shakers is not a date number, but probably an inventory or design number.
