How do I post photos

Post by catbueker »

I have a silver toast holder with crystal salt cellars on each side. I would like to upload photos so that the hallmarks can be looked at. How do I do so?
Thanks,
Catherine

Hallmarks on a silver Sheffield toast rack

Post by catbueker »

Hello. Thank you for helping me get the photos to this site.
This item is a silver toast rack with what I believe are crystal salt cellars on either end. (How it ended up upside down I am not sure). It reads SHEFFIELD 964 with a capital W under Sheffield. The other four hallmarks I have not been able to understand. Any input would be appreciated. Best, Catherine

Hello Catherine,

The marks you are having difficulty reading are written in a Gothic text and are EPNS for electro plated nickel silver, meaning your toast rack is silver plated. They are parts of the maker mark of Viners Limited of Sheffield ( V. LD for Viners Limited).

Please see Viners here: http://www.silvercollection.it/electrop ... UVdue.html

cheers,
Steve

That's terrific Steve. Is there any marks that indicate it's age ?

Heaps of thanks!

Sorry Catherine, afraid there's nothing in the marks to indicate age. As you will have already read, the company was in business between 1901 and 1985. The design of the toast rack has an Art Deco influence but I suspect that timewise, it may be a little later than the 1930's . My best guess is 1930's to end of the 1950's. I recollect my parents having been given a great deal of silver plate items similar in design as wedding presents in the late 1940's.

Regarding the crystal dishes, I don't think they are salt cellars, but rather butter pats.

Cheers,
Steve

I think you're right, Steve. Butter pats make a lot more sense than salt cellars! Thanks for all of the insight.
