Gorham Castle Crag 1893 or 1910

Post by Traintime »

Appears to be a pitcher from the Castle Crag Hotel (1880's-1920's?) in Northern California. Date symbol looks like 1893, however the pattern number has already reached the era of 5 digit places (a zero before an older four digit pattern). Would the 1910 date code seem more likely even though the horizontal line is missing?

It's the 1893 date mark (the 1910 mark is actually sort of twisted with tails, rather than just two conjoined circles), and the Gorham mark is typical of their 19th century electroplate. Not sure what you mean regarding the "era of 5 digit places (a zero before an older four digit pattern)" - the '0' prefix was used on their silverplate from 1863 until at least the 1930s; Gorham production codes vary in the number of digits, and other than within a matched set of pieces, are not in any sequential order...

Thanks Cheryl. Got better photos of marks, definitely the 1893 code. Including here the top detail of pitcher. From Southern Pacific Railroad's Wayside Notes c.1916 the lodging was called "Castle Crag Hotel and Cottages" without the plural found in the location's name of Castle Crags.

Background: "Tavern of Castle Crag" built 1892 by Pacific Improvement Company (basically another front for the railroad organizers) with 250 rooms. Expanded 1893 with another 300 rooms. Managed by same as Hotel Del Monte. A health resort with added facilities and cottage cabins. Site of mineral waters. Had own electricity and ice making. Main structure burned 1900, never re-built. More cottages added, but never re-covered old fame. Sold in 1910. Operated to about 1927 and thence becoming private retreat. Location in upper Sacramento River Canyon near Castle Crag Station of old Siskyou Line of Shasta Route.
