P R Horsehead 90...Is it German or Dutch?

Post by jennifer_sita »

Hi All,

I'm new here and hope you can help me. I have these sugar tongs that are marked with a P...then a horse head...then an R...then 90. I understand the 90 indicates it is silver-plated. I see that this usually was marked on German SP, but that it also could be found on SP goods from the Netherlands. Any idea who makes it? When might it have been made? Is it German or Dutch?

Thanks very much.

Hello, Jennifer_sita, I hope you are still looking to see if you have been replied to.
This is an occasion when I do not need to answer my own post about a Dutch silverplate mark with the “horse’s head” image. It was in 2013 and 2014 that I posted similar images to jennifer_sita’s without response. Then today when looking for information on a different “equine” silver mark I think I found the answer to my and jennifer_sita’s question. First I found the “P,head,R” image on a thimble also carrying a Dutch “dagger” silver standard mark. That gave a company (Drost Gzb (PakoMetaalwarenfabriek) Rhenen). And from that I found the full set of Dutch marks shown below. If the date letter is as I think it is, an “r”, the marks are from 1977.

Subsequently I found the below, Google translated, quote.

"Pako Rhenen BV is a company that was founded in 1943. It was then still called; metalware factory "THE HORSE HEAD". In the course of the years the silverware became less, "THE HORSE HEAD" became Pako for short, and we started to specialize more in the ornamental fencing and outdoor lighting."

So hopefully this is correct and “Pako Rhenen BV” made my spoon, jennifer_sita’s and Varouge’s spoon. Varouge’s asked the same question about the horse head mark in 2007. Rhenen is in central Holland and this is the reference to my earlier post with its images.

Hi Fishless, thanks for the information and I believe you are right!

PAKO, DE AFKORTING VAN; DE PAARDENKOP. locatie stad Rhenen.

Pako NV Rhenen huldigt acht jubilarissen

PAKO, THE DUTCH ABBREVIATION OF; THE HORSE HEAD. location city of Rhenen

In the 1940s, 'metalware factory de Paardenkop' started at the current location. At that time, however, no ornamental fencing or outdoor lighting was made, but crockery and the well-known teaspoons.
Over the years the name has been changed to Pako Rhenen, and the activities are changing to making and supplying decorative fencing and outdoor lighting.

Pako NV Rhenen honors eight jubilees
Eight employees have been employed for a quarter of a century
Yesterday eight employees of the silverware factory PAKO NV in Rhenen recalled that they joined the company 25 years ago at the same time. These employees have been very closely involved in the development of the company over the years.
Started in a 2x3 meter shed, Pako NV grew into the modern, well-equipped factory with a warehouse space of 3600 m2 at present.

Obviously, this has not all happened automatically and there have been moments, in which the future looked very sad for the company. There, firstly, the tableware (complete cassettes, etc.) made of stainless steel, with which PAKO NV Rhenen had acquired a good reputation in the years between 1946-1968, with a large domestic outlet and an export to several countries. The arrival of Japanese competitors on the Dutch market with the same products at less than half the price led to a difficult time, especially for the factories, which specialized in good but cheap cutlery. Even worse was when tableware from China and the Eastern Bloc countries came to the Dutch market at dump prices. This situation did not come to an end for the time being, as competition always came from other countries, which could deliver even cheaper.
It was decided to put together a collection of articles in silver and silver plate, especially for the jeweler.
This is a very difficult area, not only because the highest demand is placed on quality, but also because access to the jewelery sector is very difficult for an outsider. To have any chance of success, this series of articles had to be distinctly different, better, more beautiful and more original than the collections of other factories, which have sometimes been introduced at the jeweler for generations. Not an easy task.
The permanent designer of PAKO NV Rhenen, who thanks to his education and experience in the antique styles was prepared, came up with a series of designs inspired by the Gothic, Renaissance and French Louis styles, to the Biedermeier and the Victorian Era. This series received an enthusiastic reception at the jeweler's.
The second direction that was taken in 1967 entered a completely different new field, namely the outdoor lighting, street lamps and the like. Here too it was assumed that there is a good market for a good product. The outdoor lanterns and street lighting were executed entirely according to the antique, romantic models. The rust problem, which in the Netherlands in particular makes an outdoor lantern a questionable pleasure, was solved by starting from stainless steel and galvanized parts for the production. Thanks to these materials, the products could even be guaranteed for a lifetime.

Thus, according to Mr. B. Drost, director and founder of PAKO NV RHENEN, we can now say four years after the switch to the current production: "'What insiders thought impossible was possible, PAKO is fast becoming a name. acquire as a manufacturer of exclusively beautiful and exclusive good. The firm owes all this to the full commitment of all workers in the company, staff and staff, to their craftsmanship and to the trust with which they ovecume the difficult years. It is therefore a particular pleasure to congratulate eight of these people on their 25th anniversary. They were victorius and beat the difficult time that lies behind us. "We hope that they will be able to work with us for many years".
