Matthew Bouton or Mappin Brothers

Post by paulh »

This is an Old Sheffield Plate Salver with marks which I have seem attributed to both Matthew Boulton and Mappin Brothers. Can anyone give me a definite attribution?

Paul.

Hi Paul,

I would have thought if it were Sheffield Plate, then it must be Boulton.

The 'Sun' mark was granted to Joseph Mappin by the Cutlers' Company on the 26th June 1835, and its use was continued by Mappin Brothers. I would have thought that during the period of from 1835 to the advent of electro plating in the early 1840's that the Mappin concern would more likely be involved in the process of close plating only as their main line of business at that time would have that of cutlery.

Hello Trev, That would seem logical. I am not sure what that mark which looks like a tulip is. I am sure I have seen it somewhere, but I can't find any reference to it.

Regards,
Paul.
