Is this item fom Sheffield?

Post by pmenso »

I have a letter opener probably from Sheffield.
Can anyone help me identify the hall marks?
How old is this item?

Hi Paul,

Welcome to the Forum.

I don't recall seeing this particular set of marks before, but these are typical plater's mark from the 19th century, they are not hallmarks I'm afraid, just imitations of official marking.

The only thing about them that I can say with confidence is that the item pre-dates the outlawing of the use of the crown device on plated items as from 1897.
