makers mark help

Postby goldresearch » Tue May 01, 2012 9:01 am

On a "box" for possible olibanum I found an Old Austrian tax mark with the city mark for Lemberg (Lwiw), 1806-1824. But there are two further marks, maybe makers mark; does somebody have informations about these two marks, please?

Kind regards

Hi goldresearch -
the shown Lemberg mark is in my sources for the years 1806/7. This is an Austrian - Hungarian object which you should present in the right forum - maybe there your questions will be answered.

Hallo Zolotnik!

Thank you for your answer! I know now, the "box" isn´t made of silver. The base metal is brass and it is silver plated. I think the best forum is >>Silverplate Trademarks - Worldwide<<. Can you tell me, how I can transfer this post to the new forum, please? Or is this change only reserved for the admin?

Kind regards

Hi,

I've moved the post, but I'm stumped about the Lemburg mark. Is it not genuine?

Hallo dognose,

if I can buy into the literaure (A. Rohrwasser, Österreichs Punzen, 1983, Verlag Bondi, ISBN 3-900 008-07-8), the Emperor of Austria, Franz I., had to less money and so he introduced a tax for second hand silver and gold ware regardless to the finess of gold and silver. If somebody has paid the tax, the re-hallmark was placed on the item. I think the officials didn´t be so fussy and take money for pretentious items too. The can looks similar to a silver can and so it has happend. ;-)

Kind regards

Hi Goldresearch,

Many thanks for the explanation. It's certainly an unusual case when even an official mark is not to be trusted, but as there was no assay involved, it is perhaps not so surprising.

Trev.
