if I can buy into the literaure (A. Rohrwasser, Ã–sterreichs Punzen, 1983, Verlag Bondi, ISBN 3-900 008-07-8), the Emperor of Austria, Franz I., had to less money and so he introduced a tax for second hand silver and gold ware regardless to the finess
of gold and silver. If somebody has paid the tax, the re-hallmark was placed on the item. I think the officials didnÂ´t be so fussy and take money for pretentious items too. The can looks similar to a silver can and so it has happend. ;-)
