JGNS and pictorial marks: help much appreciated

Post by droopsnout »

My wife has acquired a rather sad looking spoon which has probably lost all of its plating, but the marks provoke interest.

I have tried to look these up, but without success, except that a search for JGNS gave rise to the expression "pelican silver", but that was a dead end. I also came across the Prince of Wales' Feathers mark on this site's silverplate marks, but did not come across a meaning for it. I expect I have missed something somewhere. If so, I apologise.

Hello. That mark was used by Joseph Gilbert, Birmingham, England.

Thank you, Pat!

I presume that I am right in thinking that you're referring to the JGNS mark, not to the others? I note some of your other marks are different (crown instead of Prince of Wales' feathers; and the third mark from the left - whatever that is, though I've been thinking of it as a Yin & Yan symbol).

I've searched for the feathers and have not revealed any useful info. They appear on the marks of Deykin and others, but here would they not indicate the assay town?

I presume the fourth mark is an orb.

As you see, we are total beginners! Apologies for hogging your time!

The JG over NS mark is one of the marks used by Joseph Gilbert.
The other is the "orb" or "female symbol" which appears in their sets of silverplate marks.

The Fleur-de-Lys in this case is just a pseudo mark. http://www.925-1000.com/silverglossary3.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It does not identify a town and silverplated wares were not assayed.
