trident brooch ID

Post by EilidhEngineer »

I've found a brooch marked sterling silver with the following marks:

I D (tudor rose) (lion passant left facing) S

I think I'm correct in saying the lion denotes it's English and the Rose denotes it's from sheffield?

I just don't understand the ID and the S at the end...I've searched on lots of sites but I can't find ID as a combination together so I'm a little stuck, could anyone offer any advice please?

I know I'm supposed to post images and I have 2 lovely clear photos, showing the front and back where the marks are clearly identifiable but (I'm embarrassed to admit) I can't seem to add an image...sorry for being such a noob.

Hi Eilidh,

Yes, you are correct with your findings.

The first two letters are the sponsor's/maker's marks, these are unknown to me. The last letter 'S', indicates the year of assay as 1992.

Trev,

Thankyou very much for your kind assistance and advice :-)

This is the first mystery silver item I've found in a charity shop and I'm looking forward to learning and finding more.
