Mystery Chain

Hello,
I've had this heavy silver chain - possibly a fob watch chain but it is only about seven inches in length - for some time but it has always puzzled me. The marks lead me to believe it is from Exeter and the date letter 'd' is for 1820. However the item doesn't have that old feel about it and it also has '925' stamped on it, which I don't think is a custom from this time. Also is the very puzzling 'XL' stamped on the item. I cannot find any maker's marks in Exeter for an 'XL' ( or in Edinburgh, which could be where the chain was made, as I sometimes confuse the three caslte stamp used by both these cities ). I'm wondering if actually the 'XL' stands for 'extra-large' but why on earth this could be so as the chain, whilst quite chunky, is not really that large. I wonder if someone can help in solving this mystery and thankyou for taking time to look at my questions.
