Question about Ring Purity Mark and possible Makers Mark

Post by sherlockjr »

Hi! I recently bought this ring and have been trying to figure out whether it's actually old or not (I'm hoping it's from the 1920s-30s). It has STERLING marked in the band, but has the S missing; is it possible that the S wore off or is it just junk? And then it looks like there is some other mark right after it, but for the life of me, I can't figure out what it might be. If anyone has any insight, I would really appreciate it! Thank you!

Welcome to the forum. Just not a good stamping. I think it looks nice, but am uncertain about what percentage of folks would agree.

Hi,
It is sterling, marks are not always perfectly struck.
Small stones are marcasite, not set with prongs but much cheaper setting (just glued).
The design looks Art Deco but again, if marcasites are set like this, the ring cannot be anything special.

Thank you for the info, AG2012! I'm glad to know that it is sterling.
