Prague makers mark IFH
Hi All, I recently purchased this table snuff box because its made from silver and the price seemed good...and it's made from silver. Oh, did I mention it's made from silver. I seem to have a bit of a problem with things made from silver. I keep buying them and then trying to find somewhere to put t...

Re: Help Identify botlle opener
Hi Widzrw, Sorry, I realised the second I hit submit that I'd referenced the wrong Whiting Company. The mark I believe, belongs to FM Whiting. You can find out more here: http://www.925-1000.com/patterns_FMWhiting_2.html As far as the pattern goes, it's obviously can't be Lily as that is a pattern b...

Re: Help Identify botlle opener
Hi Widzew, It looks like the mark of Whiting Manufacturing Co and I think the pattern may be Lily but it's hard to see from your photos. You can find out more here: http://www.925-1000.com/Whiting_Date_Code.html Can I suggest you have a read the following link as it clearly explains how to upload th...

I am happy to offer my opinion on cleaning but you will find this is an area where opinions often differ. Also, I'm not sure if there are restrictions on posting brand names of products on the forum. If so, an administrator will remove the offending text. As you say, they are very tarnished so i wou...

Re: Spoon and Fork for Fabio
Hi M3roc,
You are correct, Your fork and spoon are solid sterling silver. They were made by Mappin & Webb of Norfolk Street Sheffield England and assayed in Sheffield in 1924.
Cheers,
Steve

Re: 18th Century Russian Coin Dishes with very rare coins
Hi All, These same dishes...and I do mean same(identical photos as supplied by Mingas) have been advertised on our favourite online auction site(Australian version) for about 12 months. They are claimed to be authentic 18th century and silver and priced as such. No mention of silver plate and they a...

Re: 1799 Solomon Hougham? Tea Caddy or Sugar casket?
Hi Thomas,
Yes, I would agree with London, 1799 and maker Solomon Hougham.
I do believe I see a lock key hole which to me, would indicate a tea caddy. I'm sure you are aware, tea was still extremely expensive at this time...hence a lock to keep the contents safe.
Cheers,
Steve

Re: Who is the London maker SSc or SSe?
Hi Niceguy1, I'm unable to find an SSe or SSc either but will put forward another possibility. I agree the 'e ' or 'c' looks intentional, particularly with the clean cut out of the cartouche but wonder if its not a damaged makers mark of Steven Smith of King Street, Covent Garden. My reasoning is th...

Re: Unknown Mark on figurine
Hi Decsilver,
It's a British Registration Date mark. I can't make out all the details, but enough to to know it relates to the period 1868 - 1883.
You can find the exact date and what all the numbers and letters mean here(note: use table 2);

Hi David, You probably thought you had an outcome and here I am about to question it... Although I don't offer a positive country of origin, I strongly believe that your pieces are not Yogya silver as suggested. Sorry Alex. I have quite a number of pieces of Yogya silver myself and they are easily r...

Re: Can someone help me recognize the makers mark
Hi Geoprink, Your tray is modern. The mark you have asked about is the post 1974 Tudor Rose for Sheffield which replaced the Crown. Makers/Sponsor mark = C .J. V over Ld for C J Vander Ltd. Tudor Rose = Sheffield Lion Passant = Sterling Date letter P = 1989 For further details regarding the maker/sp...

Re: What country this hallmark??? THANKS
Hi Mingas, I think you and Trev are both correct. Instead of the usual EPNS, your piece is marked BPNS. I have seen it a couple of times in the past, originally thinking the B was a badly struck E but now think it's intentional. Best guess is that the B simply stands for British, meaning British Pla...

Hi Londontown,
I think the initials may read as H C. Have a look on the marque link supplied by jgl and see if you think its a match for Henry Cagan.
Cheers,
Steve

Hi EveP,
Welcome to the forum.
The makers mark is that of the Crescent Silverware Mfg.Co. Your piece is therefore silver plated and is also not British. It was made in the USA.
Please see: http://www.925-1000.com/silverplate_C2.html

Thankyou Cheryl for your time and knowledge. They stand 2 1/8" (55mm) tall and the outer rim diameter is 2 1/4" (58mm). The inner diameter is 1 3/16"(30mm). I have just tried to place a standard candle in one and found the candle way too thin. I'm tending towards salt cellars but stil...

Help with Gorham object use and confirm date
Hi All, I confess that I'm not well versed with American silver and so when I purchased this pair of Gorham "I'm not quite sure what", some years ago, understood they were made by Gorham and assumed them to be a pair of small candle holders. I'm now having second thoughts as to their use a...
