Re: Could use assistance ID'ing these Egyptian hallmarks.

Hi welcome to the forum. The marks are dirty and not convincing and could be fake. The first mark at the left assay office identifier - Cairo, above fineness mark =80% Silver ٨٠ 2nd Mark, indeed the Lotus flower, introduced in October 1946. The 3rd Mark, year letter probably ف for 1978 . For better ...

Re: What is the meaning of the French Small Guarantee swan mark?

Yes, that is certainly true. But I notice that second-hand reference works regarding silversmith marks and hallmarks are still "expensive" or not available. I know because I just bought 2nd hand; Walter van Dievoet, Répertoire général des orfèvres et des marques d'orfèvrerie en Belgique II...

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q70/922/B8eul7.png The mark in the barrel is a bearskin cap. This sponsor/responsibility mark was used by Henry Jules Quintin, active in Brussels 18-2-1942-ca 1956. I believe the forks to be made by Quintin and Wilkens & Söhne to be the retailer/importe...

Re: German & Belgium Hallmarks?

You are right, Belgian responsibility mark in barrel , and Belgian fineness mark A(rgent)800. Can you see what's in the barrel? https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilkens_%26_S%C3%B6hne The maker's mark of Wilkens  & Söhne is a Spindelpresse or screwpress. 800 fineness with crescent moon and crown,...

Re: What is the meaning of the French Small Guarantee swan mark?

I think this moderator was somewhat right. Like you said Tardy can be a useful guide to give a quick overview of world hallmarks, and it is published in English and French. For proper research and specific information, if possible we should consult specialized literature. If not available, this foru...

Re: What is the meaning of the French Small Guarantee swan mark?

Today there is little confusion about the French Swan. International Hallmarks on Silver collected by Tardy is certainly not outdated and a must have for people who are interested in silver hallmarks. Great for finding out which country uses or has used a particular mark(s)and for a quick cursory se...

Re: Sterling Sugar Shaker?

Much better image of the marks! You are right it is the maker's mark of Rinze Jans Spaanstra. Spaanstra used the pseudo mark VB(#357), an imitation of a maker's mark. This pseudo mark is partly struck on the base of your shaker. The other pseudo mark perhaps letter P on curved bar (#280), imitation ...

Re: Sterling Sugar Shaker?

The pseudo marks are part of the decoration, it has authentic Dutch 19th century hallmarks. For a sugar shaker/caster the whole thing may look strange. Certainly, the two handles make it easy to pass the sugar caster to guests when eating a sweet dessert at the table. Or when eating Dutch mini panca...

At the base of the “shaker” Dutch lion passant above 2, in hexagon, 2nd standard mark for silver 833/000, with export key. D pseudo year letter. The original maker’s mark, unclear. Pseudo year letter B. Please check the body for other marks, these could be hidden in the decoration. For information a...
