Re: Pomander Repousse Ajoure import + hallmarks

Only that the 925 [fineness mark], CCM, national mark (in this case the London Leopard head), and the sponsor mark are all part of the current marking requirements. Your photo of the marks isn't ideal - have you compared the 1992 'S' to your mark? Do you agree with my assessment of the letter match?

By Jove, I believe that fellow has it! The 'S' mark exactly coincides with the 1992 'S'.

Re: Marks on an old watch

As for the watch case, I believe you have it right, with the 'GS' being the sponsor submitting the piece for marking.

I'll take a shot at the buckle - Lion passant, leopard head, 'c' - for London, 1918-19.

The 'AL' appears to be an overmark and the 'shell' may be as well. Am I stating the obvious?

I suspect these were cast, if the backsides were shown, it would likely prove/disprove it.

Re: Towle Old Colonial - Plate or Sterling?

Yes, your scale was not made to accurately weigh anything whilst in a bag in water. There are some other techniques you could use. 1) If you can suspend the object beneath the scale with fishing line and a 'C' shaped piece of stiff wire (a wire clothes hanger, for instance) balanced on the scale sur...

A last bit of trivia - a bowl by this company was the last item marked by the Glasgow Assay Office in 1964.

Empire Exhibition 1938 Spoon - Maker?

A new purchase - a souvenir spoon depicting the 'Tower of Empire' (or 'Tait's Tower'), marked in Glasgow, 1938 (also registered 1938), but who's the maker? Thanks for any help. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y10/salmoned/IMG_0456.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y10/salmoned/IMG_0451.jpg http:...

Re: What-is-it Question CLXXI

Okay, it's an anointing oil holder. This is from wikipedia: "The Roman Catholic Church blesses three types of holy oils for anointing: Oil of the Catechumens (traditionally abbreviated "OC"), Oil of the Infirm ("OI"), and Sacred Chrism ("SC"). The first two are sai...

I can't imagine why anyone would. Your rudeness at not sharing all you knew, then blasting Silverport for offering related information isn't quite as inviting of replies as you may have imagined. Thanks, Silverport - I found the information interesting.

Re: Grimwade #3688, IS&AN, on 1767 ladle

Grimwade's #3688 has a cruciform frame and the center pip has 5 lobes. Your mark more nearly matches #3689, noted as 'unidentified, cream-jugs, 1768 and 1771'.
