Re: Sterling applique Vase
Wow! thanks! I didn't think of Alvin as there's no "crossbar" in the "A" (bad stamp?). I thought perhaps it was an upside down mark with a "V" in the center. Anyway how'd they do this? Is it arts & crafts period? I just took a guess. And on another note, how do you ...

Sterling applique Vase
Don't recognize this mark.. Anyone know who made it? And what do you call this sort of silver applique over glass? I've seen this done by way of silver plating over copper on lead but not solid sterling; that I can recall anyway. It's a nice piece! Any thoughts appreciated.... regards, mitch https:/...

I thought the "M" with the crown was a maker's mark... as shown on the page you noted in your first post, third one down??

Re: Royal Copenhagen silver mounted pitcher
Fabulous!!! So as dognose and Hose_dk imply, the "M" with the crown over it could be A. Michelsen. The page on Danish smiths says just "1930's" as to a time frame for that stamp. Question is, why are there two distinct maker's marks on this piece?, a collaboration perhaps? One do...

Re: Royal Copenhagen silver mounted pitcher
dognose you've done it again!! Thanks! I thought of the Art Nouveau period the minute I layed eyes on it. But for sure the maker's link you provide sure matches up nicely with Simon Groth's mark, the use of which apparently ended by 1904. Tha would put it squarely in the Art Nouveay period; very coo...

Royal Copenhagen silver mounted pitcher
I would like to know if anyone has a way to date this piece. And; what exactly is it? I know sometimes things/items have multiple uses but this being Danish I though perhaps it had/has some specific use. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3943/15562605591_8c257c332b_c.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/...

Christofle tiny vase/toothpick holder
So I have this little item: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5605/15561745551_9f27911911_c.jpg It certainly "looks" like sterling, and is marked with one of Christofle's silver marks except: it's "C's" are backwards. The damn mark is so small that I've also drawn a picture of it, h...

Re: Pill Box?? No Mark... French?
I'm telling you; and I'm good at looking.... there are no marks. None. But it is what it is; a really nice pill box! Unless it has another use/name. Would you call this a pill box?

Pill Box?? No Mark... French?
Ran across this today and bought it. Really nice silver work, gold gilt interior, but: no marks anywhere. Could it have been a practice piece? or for the smith's own use? I've even considered that it had been polished/rubbed off but the stamp would have left a dimple on the inside and there's not on...

Thank you Warren! I missed entirely that the word stamped there was "Toledo"! I just couldn't make sense of it.

Help with ID on Candle Holder w/ handle
A customer has this and wanted to just know where it was made and what to call it. Mods please move this ( and tell me 'to where' please...) if need be. It tests sterling: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3900/14428956758_fa2ba40681_c.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5486/14428943318_cef50d6a61_c.jp...

Finial Vessel: what was it used for?
Here's an item I've found for sale:
(admin edit - see Posting Requirements )
What do you suppose it was used for? It's lid has a cutout for a spoon handle but it's quite small. Anyone have an idea how this was used?

Re: Unmarked classical jug. Very high quality
What a find, that's a magnificent jug. So in this thread it's discussed the many ways (dognose's post) some item like this might go unmarked: http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=37255 In Robert Massart's article on the "bigorne" marks on French silver, you begin to see th...

Re: A pair of flower stands... help to ID mark
Warren, Zilver2 and Oel; may I ask when you think these might have been made? The "Belle Epoque" period seems to have run right up to the end of the 19th and on into the 20th so were they made possibly that late? Seems by then they would have had to stamp the Minerva's head on them unless ...

Re: A pair of flower stands... help to ID mark
So therefore, a "consumer/buyer" from the period would have to rely on just a maker's mark alone to make sure it was silver? In reading that article, it looks like the bigorne marks were used through 1846 but then what? When did they stop using them? And, why would there be no mark at all ...

Re: A pair of flower stands... help to ID mark
Zilver2... a big thank you to ya! If your familiar with this maker, can you say if these are uncommon/desireable items? or something seen often for the period? 1822 to 1920 is almost 100 years... so I take it the business was passed down through the family? I don't know much about French silver or m...
