Silver trowel without makers mark

Hi all, Can anyone shed some light on this piece? It is a large trowel (around 12" long), would it have been used as a presentation piece, or? There are no inscriptions on it. Also, the only two hallmarks on it are the George IV right facing duty mark and the crowned harp - so it must be from 1...

Articulated fork / spoon serving tongs

Hi all, Can anyone tell me what these large tongs would have been used for? Made by Laurence Keary in 1822, and retailed by John Twycross. http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj239/ammolithmine/IMG_0817_zpsokmzlzaq.jpg http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj239/ammolithmine/IMG_0818_zpsmgwvok0y.jpg htt...

Re: Need help with Russian maker's mark under the Morozov company

Hi all, Perhaps not all of you have access to such good resources as Qrt.S and me! ;-)) Herttuainen Adam was a Finn, born in 1853 who moved to St Petersburg where he started a silver workshop where he produced only table silverware to be retailed by St Petersburg jewellers (including Faberge and oth...

Unknown Tiffany Flatware Pattern

Hi all, I have a Tiffany child's cutlery set consisting of a small knife and fork (6 and 5 inches in length respectively) with marks for Tiffany 1902-1907. I am stumped however, by the pattern on them. I have never seen it before and haven't been able to find anything online. Can anyone shed any lig...

Re: Patent Registration Lozenge Mark

Hi AG,
Yes, they were indeed copied by Alessi, however this isn't one of the Alessi reproductions. It certainly isn't an 'original' Dresser teapot (they sell for £100000+), but I suspect that this is an older reproduction.

Re: Patent Registration Lozenge Mark

Thanks for the quick reply Trev. I am asking with reference to a plated teapot in the style of Christopher Dresser. It bears no silverplate marks, but is marked 'Designed by Dr C Dresser' and also features an 1878 lozenge mark. Trying to ascertain whether or not this is an old or modern piece!

Patent Registration Lozenge Mark

Hi all, Happy New Year. I have a quick question about the British lozenge mark for registered patents (see: http://www.925-1000.com/registry.html ). Am I correct in assuming that from 1884 onwards, this was no longer stamped on items, and instead the registered patent number was stamped instead? Thi...

Re: HELP; Russian Monogram on Fabergé

Perhaps I should add my two cents... and I'll start here... What are you talking about? It's not fake. But sure, you are right and all high-end auction houses are wrong. And as you write, some are real, some are fake. I got a real one. You should do your homework before coming with such comments. I ...

Re: Pairs of napkin rings

Hi Zolotnik,
Some very nice napkin rings. Thank you for showing. I'd love to see any other particularly nice napkin rings which you have, even if they aren't pairs.
Best wishes,
P

PS. The Shaposhnikov ones are my favourite! ;))

Re: Russian beaker

Opinions may be divided on the forum, but at the end of the day it is your collection. If you are 100% happy with the items, keep them. If you have a single doubt about them, you should sell, as you will never be completely satisfied with them and it will bug you. My advice is to get rid of the two ...

Re: 2 Kovsh's Ovchinnikov (my last hope of real)

Dear Klingert, I fear that the news is bad... When it comes to Russian silver, you simply cannot place your trust in dealers or 'valuers'. The only solution is to learn for yourself by reading the forum, acquiring and reading the right books (you will find plenty of recommendations on the forum) and...

Re: Russian beaker

Hi all,
A piece clearly not in the Russian style. I agree with AG - the over struck marks (of which there are more than one) look like Hanau to me, and the style fits.

Re: Russian ashtrays

That is because it is translating the word and not transliterating it! The Russian word Дука‚ TRANSLATES to the English word Ducat (meaning the coin) but the Russian name Дука‚ TRANSLITERATES to Dukat.

Re: Russian ashtrays

Hi numis, As a native speaker of English with bilingual proficiency in Russian (and a handful of others... French, German, blah blah etc) let me point out that that the Cyrillic letter К should always be transliterated to Latin as K, not C. This is because C can represent too many different possible...

Re: Russian mark

I agree with Zolotnik about this spoon - to me it is more than dubious. As stated by Zolotnik, this excess use of blue doesn't appear in Klingert's work. I have seen teaspoons with this style used as shown on a spoon from my collection below, but not from a maker like Klingert. See: Teaspoon with bl...

Re: 1871 Kiddush Cup

Hi all,
Just a thought, but the stopka appears to also have a makers mark on the rim as shown in picture 1 - maybe the maker later added another on the base with the main hallmarks added by the assayer?
Also with regard to stopka vs. stakan... A stakan is much bigger than a stopka!

Hi Zolotnik,
Genius! I am aware of the upside down marks on some items but hadn't thought of that this time! Thank you once again! :-)
