I can confirm that the mark is that of Charles S Green & Co (I have a piece by them, being a Serviette Ring imported into Australia by Hardy Bros).

Birmingham 1950 is my estimate as to date.

I suspect Webster is on the same train of thought in relation to this piece.

SilverSurfer, I agree with you - none of my references should this particular mark (although Roker III would be the prime suspect).

Webster, do you have access to a copy of Grimwade’s London Goldsmiths 1697-1837?

Cheers

The "Heart shape" with WP is perhaps that of William Page & Co. of Birmingham, England, electroplate manufacturer who seems to have started business circa.1897

Hi

Generally, EP stands for Electro - Plate (i.e. Silverplate). Your pieces are not Sterling Silver I am afraid. As for the makers - that would require a photograph, but the marks sound to be British.

From what I know of Egyptian hallmarks (which is not that much I might add), the "cat" was only used between 1906 (?) and 1946, which gives your piece a certain "age" period.

A lovely piece. I would presume that your piece is Sterling, but it is an unusually high content - that is, it is 950 parts per 1000 silver. I am not aware of any country which used this purity level on a regular basis; I believe Reed & Barton used it for a while to compete with Gorham's "M...

I think it's the Sterling mark of the firm of J. B. & S. M. Knowles. "It was founded in 1875 by brothers, Joseph and Stephen Knowles. The company was primarily a manufacturer of flatware, but did make some hollowware. The firm was later purchased by the Mauser Manufacturing Company." T...

1774 is a bit early. I've looked at your hallmarks, and the trouble with saying 1774 is that, for that year, the bottom of the Anchor was a shart point / diamond - not the "wavy" bottom of the Anchor on your piece. I note that the markings for 1926 are very similar to those on your piece, ...

Hi

From the photos, I would assume that your piece is Britannia Plate (per BP), made perhaps by William Hutton & Sons of Sheffield (major manufacturers), although I have not seem them use a straight WH & S mark before (and WH & S may be quite common initials).

Thanks

Hi Well done. 1750 is the correct date, Londond is the correct town. I will note that you are slighly amiss with the maker. The bottom has bee rubbed away, as the mark is RT over CG (diamond shape marks usually consist of 4 letters). This was the mark of Richard Gurney and Thomas Cook, whose mark wa...

Hmm, it's a bit of a puzzler. My best bet is 1741 (the mark being up side down, being a lower case f).

Hi and thanks for your post. I am glad I can be of some help; 1) Your piece dates between 1740 and 1755 (the date letter is not clear enough in the photo). Try looking at the London date letters on this site! British Hallmarks 2) Assayed in London 3) Maker appears to be Fras. Spilsbury (Jacksons 3rd...

For what it is worth, the case dates to 1830. Maker looks to be Vale & Ratheram (Jacksons 3rd edition page 356).

Hmm, the marking 800 would indicate a European origin to the piece. I think both Italy and Germany use / did use the 800 (numerical) mark.

I'm going to assume that your dating is correct, as the photo isn't that clear. As for a maker - your maker's mark is in Script font. The first letter is R, and we can just see a part of another letter. I'm personally punting for Ben Godfrey, mark entered 1739, as his mark is RG in Script form, and ...

Thanks for the information regarding 750 hallmarking for silver. As an English Silver collector, it's news to me. You are never to old to be proved wrong ;)

Hmm, I may be wrong, but I think the marks look suspiciously Egyptian, and pre 1946 (cat c.f. lotus flower). What does everyone else think?
