To my eyes, it lacks the top left line of the r which is so prominent in that particular set of Sheffield marks. I'd go with 1895.

Thanks for your help Mike; though I have to say it was rather disappointing. Are you sure? All the signs, to me, seem to point to an earlier date: shell back, turned up, old style monogram and (an often disregarded sign) considerable wearing on one side of the bowl (top pic) and pitting (bottom pic)...

Dating a spoon with no date mark.

Here is a an early shell backed teaspoon with a central ridge. It has a maker's mark, a lion passant but no date letter. I date the spoon (by its design) at 1730's, but I'd like the opinion of someone else. I think the maker is Thomas Whipham, the end of the spoon turns up, it has a faint outline of...

This most definitely is not 1771; if it were, the leopards head ( London assay mark) would be wearing a crown. I'm tempted to think the piece is 1951, but do get a second opinion. "Filled" or "weighted" is a practice often used with large pieces of silver such as candlesticks and...

Tom, I can't tell you the date of the spoon by the hallmarks, but by the style of engraving on the monogram it looks to be 1735 - 1750. Does it say M over D + C? If so it was probably given to a couple as a wedding present; M being the initial of the couple and D and C being the initials of their fo...

Waylander, It does have two letters, so I suppose the F must stand for foreign. If you look at the spoon's knop on the first picture, it doesn't seem to be very English nor does the handle; what do you think? I think the BM maker's mark might be the key. I'll have got my camera back on Friday so I'l...

Unsure of maker and date of spoon

Can anyone tell me the date of this spoon? I'm pretty sure that it's Chester but I don't know whether the T or the F is the date letter. Also, does anyone know who B.M is? http://x11.putfile.com/4/9817045595.jpg http://x11.putfile.com/4/9816581912.jpg Thanks, Granmaa Any further advice for the compu...
