Re: What-is-it question CCIV
I like that ratcheting lever better than the modern ones with direct rotati0n blade. it would be easier on everyone's fingers.

Re: How much restoring on 19th Century Silver?
Hi Joerg, Without going into any detail on individual values I follow this rule of thumb: 1. If it is mass manufactured and worn it is scrap. 2. If it was hand forged and worn it has character, and worth saving. 3. If it is worth saving, keep it as original as possible. Straightening fork tines is c...

Re: Mystery Engraving on Snuff Box
Trev, That ups my assessment of the second engraver. To line a background like that and to do the interiors of the letters needs either a fool or a very skilled hand. One slip and you have ruined the item. The font still looks to be of a later date. I typically associate later Georgian with more ope...

Re: Mystery Engraving on Snuff Box
Curiouser and curiouser! I read the engraving as by 2 distinct hands. The body of decoration is simplistic and in certain areas almost crude. The uniformity of depth of the lines and weakness of design is sharply contrasted with the lettering. The lettering was by a more practiced hand showing a ref...

Re: Reference Books - What do you use?
Amena, a lot depends on the copyright laws of the country where the book was published. Most countries recognize the 27-year copyright limit anything older than that (that has not been issued as a new edition) may be shared. Many countries do not make a distinction for electronic versus hard copies ...

Re: Testing silver
Technique, yes, solution, no. The acid that would test 18kt gold is much stronger than used on silver. Silver is typically tested with a solution that give a colour change to indicate % of silver content.

Re: Electrodeposition
There should be any number of books of it, and I know it is often included in more general jewelry making books post 1985. I learned about it a long time ago when in university, when we had to make our own electro-conductive lacquer from finely powdered copper and shellac. Untracht's Concepts and Te...

It appears to be a cheek-plate for a bridle. The broken wires would have gone through the leather and been curled to secure them. I have made and repaired many like this over the years.

Re: Towle Silversmiths Mark
Often at Towle dies that had been in production for a long time would lose some of their marks. If a tiny piece of the pattern date became damaged they would simply stone off that mark and keep using the die. Damage to either the T-lion and the sterling stamp would lead to the die being destroyed, B...

Re: Pepper, sugar or pounce pot?
I would start with size. pepper pots are typically smaller with top in proportion to the body with small often uniform holes making a pattern (small to prevent larger pieces of pepper from over-spicing the food or breaking a tooth). Typically a sugar caster is larger and hast the taller top as Chery...
