Re: Unknown JD mark on silver sugar tongs

Hello Your vermeil sugar nips are made of 800 standard silver as shown by the Minerva head in a barrel-shaped reserve. The maker is Jean Devaux, maker of small wares in Paris, working at several addresses: 47 rue Ste-Avoye, 35 rue du Temple, and 6 rue Portefoin, using the same mark at all 3 addresse...

Re: Paris 1723-24

Hello Agree with others that this sugar bowl isn’t French. The marks aren’t correct, and the style is a “pastiche,” a copy or mixture of 18th Century styles - everything from Rococo to Neo-Classical, all in one object, with some fanciful design elements thrown into the mix, like the handles. This is...

Re: Hallmarks on this old medallion?

Hello Your gold brooch is French. The mount is made after 1838 as indicated by the eagle stamp. The item also should be marked on the frame as well as the clasp. Can you find other marks? The miniature portrait is not necessarily from the same period. The maker’s mark appears to be in a lozenge-shap...

Re: help determine the year of the snuff box

Hello Your box was made in Paris between 1819-1838 of 950 standard silver as indicated by the head of Michelangelo facing right in an octagonal reserve, and the guarantee mark of a Gorgon head in an oval reserve. The marks of the Association des Orfèvres were used well into the 19th C, and are not a...

Hello Most of your images are quite out of focus, but nevertheless here is what I can see: Image #2 is a bigorne or French countermark. Use the search function for information about the bigorne. Image #4 is the mark of the French maker Callot. Please use the search function for extensive information...

New silver catalogue of Louvre Museum

An exhaustive catalogue of the silver collections of the Louvre Museum recently was published: Bimbenet-Privat, M., Doux, F., Gougeon, C., eds. Orfèvrerie de la Renaissance et des Temps Modernes: XVI, XVII et XVIII siècles. La Collection du Musée du Louvre. Paris, Faton, 2022. Three volumes in a sli...

Re: French tastevin

Hello You don’t give us enough information to answer your questions: the marks in your first image need cleaning out and should be in focus. I see a guarantee mark from the provinces, 1819-1838, of the head of Michelangelo facing left in an oval reserve. The numbers on either side of the head are il...

Re: sommelier tastevin marking help

Hello The French marking system is highly regulated and very precise. The mark you show is not a mark for 925, 950 or 800 standard silver, but rather for a silver plated object. A Minerva head punched in either an octagonal reserve (925 standard after 1972 or 950 standard before 1972) or barrel shap...

Re: sommelier tastevin marking help

Hello This is a tastevin produced for an association of wine lovers, Confrérie des Vignerons de Saint Vincent, founded in Macon in 1951, with chapters in France and internationally. They wear funny hats and red robes at their events. Officers wear a tastevin around their necks, suspended on a gold s...

Re: Paris or Hanau ?

You’re welcome Amena. If you decide to purchase this item, I suggest you verify that the lid and the body have the same marks. Although this is modest piece of domestic silver, a mark by Outrebon might give a seller incentive to “marry” two objects that didn’t go together at time of manufacture. Reg...

Re: Paris or Hanau ?

Hello Amena Your mustard pot was made by Jean-Louis-Dieudonné Outrebon, a well-known maker from a dynasty of French Protestant silversmiths stretching back to 1703. Examples of his work can be found in several collections, including the Puiforcat collection, now in the Louvre museum. Jean-Louis was ...

Re: Souvenir Spoon of Spain Identification Help

Hello In case nobody recognizes it right away, Wikipedia has a list of all 87 cathedrals in Spain, with thumbnail pictures, and the coat of arms of the cathedral. My guess would be somewhere in Castile because of the 2 towers in the coat of arms. Good luck in your research! Regards. See: https://en....

Hello
I have just the bare minimum of information about the maker of your box:
Paul Zacharezuk, symbol a treble clef, registered in 1901.
Hope this helps to start your research.
Regards.

Re: Silver Mule with Monkey Object

If I had to hazard a guess (always risky to speculate) I’d say the toothpick holder is a representation of one of the musicians of Bremen, from the beloved fairy-tale. The other musicians also might have been depicted as a set of objects for tabletop decoration.
