Thanks for your reply, Bahner. Another mystery mark eh? I assumed - perhaps wrongly - given the theme of the spoon it might have been registered in France or Belgium.

German Spoon - Maker's Mark?
Can identify the maker of this 800 Waterloo / Napoleon silver spoon? It is marked DÉPOSÉ (no doubt the design was registered in Belgium or France). It is also marked with the German crescent and crown marks. The maker's mark looks like the intertwined letters H and S. http://i39.tinypic.com/8xu8vm...

Many thanks for your reply, Mike. Appreciated. On reflection I think the thimble could actually be older than I suggest above. It could have been made any time during the 18th century. Since I posted other candidates have been suggested to me namely: Matthews, Makepiece and Mercer. All of them Thoma...

Silver Thimble Maker TM
http://i36.tinypic.com/206kabk.jpg http://i33.tinypic.com/2kq1yq.jpg Can anyone positively ID the TM mark on this English silver thimble? The style is late 18th / early 19th century. Similar rare examples exist by Hester Bateman. It is of course a pity that the hallmarking of English silver thimble...

Re: Thanx for your detailed and interesting information.
Dorcas means doe or gazelle. It is the Greek version of the Aramaic name Tabitha. The lady referred to in the Acts of the Apostles after whom the Dorcas thimble was named was known by both versions of the name.drsheilamarykennedy wrote:origins of the name DORCAS

Sorry about the late reply, Sheila. Your thimble was made by Charles Horner of Halifax, ca 1890. It is a steel-cored and silver clad early Dorcas thimble. The design of yours is known as the Flora pattern (daisy top, diamond or waffle border). Like all early Dorcas thimbles this thimble is not marke...
