free download of Met Museum books

Hi All, The Metropolitan Museum is now allowing free downloads of their trove of art books. Go to their website, search for the topic of interest, click on the title and then click on the small "download PDF" link: https://www.metmuseum.org/art/metpublications/ There is a particularly good...

Re: paperweight with silver base

Thanks so much, Phil, for this very informative new information from the Sheffield Assay Office confirming that SL represented Sileda Ltd. as the maker's mark on the paperweight base. You also hit the bullseye in recognizing the Sheffield, Britannia and date marks on the paperweight base! I certainl...

Re: paperweight with silver base

Thanks so much for all this great help Silvermakersmarks and AG2012! I saw another posting of the Sileda hallmarks in an on-line auction for silver work on a glass item with hallmarks that closely resembled the marks on the base of the mystery paperweight (other than the date hallmark). I am not pos...

Re: paperweight with silver base

Another bit of info on Sileda's technique for adding silver to glass creations that indicates they use an "electro forming technique." From a perfume bottle listing: "The fine silver designs are then applied in our own workshops in North Wales, using an electro forming technique uniqu...

Re: paperweight with silver base

The helpful Allan Port over at the glassmessage board suggests that perhaps the SL may stand for Sileda Ltd. rather than Scotcade Ltd: "I wonder if the mark is SILEDA LIMITED and not Scotcade Ltd. Or maybe they are affiliated closely enough. Sileda was incorporated in CEFN-Y-BEDD CLYWD which is...

Re: paperweight with silver base

Good eye, AG2012! That is good infomration that the SL for Scotcade Ltd. was a sponsor's mark rather than a maker's mark. Scotcade ltd. even advertised a wheelbarrow that rolled on a ball rather than a wheel. I notice that Scotcade Ltd. also advertised some jewelry, such as watches, but I couldn't f...

Re: paperweight with silver base

Many thanks to the remarkable help of Phil (silvermakermarks) who identified the mark on the paperweight base as a Sheffield Hallmark along with the Britannia and Letter L marks. I followed up by contacting the Sheffield Assay Office for identification of the SL maker's mark. The wonderfully helpful...

Re: paperweight with silver base

Wow! Thank you all for your prompt responses! I did know that St. Louis was not the maker of the paperweight when I purchased it because St. Louis was a glass foundry rather than a silversmith and is not known to make paperweights with these canes. I really appreciate your information. After spendin...

paperweight with silver base

Hi All, I am a newcomer so please excuse my ignorance. I have an unusual paperweight of unknown maker. The paperweight has a silver base. Whether or not the base was made at the same time or place as the paperweight, I do not know. http://i64.tinypic.com/14ecnl4.jpg http://i66.tinypic.com/2yv8o77.jp...
