Re: Gold Ring Discrepancy

Hello CaptDarling The special town mark of the anchor flanked by 2 'c's denoting the bi-centenery of the Birmingham Assay Office was only used on certain punches and were used at the request of the maker, the other punches just had the usual anchor symbol. Your ring is dated 1973-4. As for the maker...

Re: Birmingham Tray - Help Needed

Hello Emmajayne1 It was not unusual for the manufacturer to stamp the maker's mark onto a piece prior to sending the item in for hallmarking which is why we often see poorly marked maker's marks next to crisp hallmarks. Also (ref the previous reply) duty was not collected by the Assay offices on sil...

Hello Pavel,
Afraid you are correct in thinking it's 'not very old' date letter is for 1992- no decimal point before the 375 indicates that it has to be later than 1975. I hope this helps.
Kind regards

Re: General Question on Birmingham Hallmarks

Hello KJ, Back to your original question as to why the duty mark and date letter were marked when you quite rightlly state that it is more usual to have the part mark of lion passant ant date letter. Due to the heavily textured nature of your piece the usual punch (which would have been in the form ...

Re: William Hutton & Sons?

Hello AG2012, A bad marking day by the manufacturer. Many manufacturers held their own maker's punches and marked them prior to hallmarking, the item would then be tested and the rest of the hallmark would be applied which is why we see so many poorly marked maker's marks (marked by silversmiths) ne...
