Re: 17th century English spoons reworked in the 19th century.

Victorians ruined not only old silver but also many antique furniture with French polish. On the other hand, let's have in mind at the time when they did it silver was not antique in their eyes being less than 100 years old. Serious auctioneers always state later decoration in description and of cour...

Re: Help on my new bought pendant~

Hi, As there is no karat fineness and hallmarks for gold, it is obviously rolled gold or gold filled jewelry. Not gold - plated, but much thicker layer of gold heat-fused to base metal and unlike extremely thin gold-plating, it exceeds 5% of gold per total weight. Besides, pearls and amethysts are w...

Re: Silver lid on Danish ceramic base

Hi, Ceramics by Michael Anderson can be found with silver mountings by several Danish silversmiths and silver platers (e.g. Cohr, Hans Hansen,Hugo Grün). Your piece, bearing crescent and crown mark,is obviously German made.Later striking (remarking) of German Reichsmark on already mounted ceramic ba...

Hi,
The mark on the right is zodiac sign of pisces (indicating the months when silver was made).
It was used in Denmark and Norway.Without more marks I cannot tell more.

Re: London Caddy Spoon - Pewter or Silver ?

Hi,
X was a quality mark on British pewter. It was crowned until 18th century.
Usually one can easily tell the difference between two metals, pewter being very soft.

Re: Vesta case

Hi,
This is not French maker`s mark.Besides,if that is the only mark, cannot be French vesta case.
Generally, if there is only maker`s mark, it is almost impossible to identify the country, and let alone the silversmith.

Hi,
Unusual to have Roman fasces on German cigarette case (it is a cigarette case, right ?).
On the other hand, very appropriate gift by a German to his Italian friend in the thirties.

There are not many silversmiths starting with M dot in PL working in St Petersburg at the time.
Try to eliminate one by one.

Re: Silversmith ID

Hi,
The mark is not well struck (applied) so, there is double struck one letter of the initials (M).
Egg coin purse has two halves, therefore both halves should bear the same marks.
Another mark should be better, because striking both marks wrongly the same way is hardly possible.

Hi, Magnetic test is done to exclude, not to prove. If positive it excludes silver. If negative.it does not prove it IS silver. In short, magnetic test is done to EXCLUDE precious metals (if positive). Although platinum is very weakly magnetic. Never heard of non magnetic ferro alloys and steel. Reg...

So, test it with magnet then electronically for th...

Re: Plz help identify this mark on a Jewish? Goblet. Russian? Israel?

Hi,
It is Moscow 1896.
Maker^s mark is on the left, but not clean and too dark to decipher, particularly the first letter is important. The second looks like Ч (Cyrillic).
