Re: Italian Gold registration number

I found the information in one of the 5 books that are part of the "punzoni dei preziosi italiani" series. These are very difficult books to find, and frankly I would not recommend purchasing them. https://i.postimg.cc/C1ngKrjW/LIBRO2.jpg They were given to me by a dealer who participated ...

Re: Italian Gold registration number

The 585 marks within the truncated lozenge and star/number/city code are certainly Italian, but the third mark does not appear to be. It is probable that an artefact coming from abroad was put on the market after having been marked with the (Italian) law hallmarks. If the number is 896 VI, then it b...

Re: A monstrance

Thanks everyone for the contribution. However, they are difficult roads to travel, I found very little information on the internet about Mexican, Brazilian or Israeli stampings. Especially from the 19th century, as the style would suggest. I haven't seen the item in person, and the photos aren't the...

A monstrance

Hi everyone I was asked to identify some sacred vessels, including this monstrance. https://i.postimg.cc/ZKPZF13W/ostensorio2.jpg On the three flat parts of the foot there are some marks that I have never seen before and which frankly don't even seem like hallmarks to me. https://i.postimg.cc/7ZY6Cx...

Re: Italian Candlestick from Bologna 18th century - or not?

Definitely not Bologna.
The lion depicted on the Tardy is slavishly copied by Rosenberg, and it is incorrect.
There are 8 different lions of Bologna, seven facing right and one facing left.
Everyone carries a pennant.

Maltese holy water bucket

Hi all yesterday I found this beautiful (for me) bucket for holy water. The hallmarking, present only on the handle, is Maltese and identifies Saverio Cannataci as the author. Alongside the Alexander Ball and Cannataci marks, there is another, tiny one, which I cannot understand. Can anyone give me ...

Re: Religious relief showing Saint Jerome

Hi Jonathan The lion of San Marcp above various initials is a mark often found in Venetian silver from the 18th century (also late 17th and early 19th). They are considered to be the marks of assayers or mint officials. Several have been detected with the letters FP, with or without dots, but I don'...

Re: 1500-1700 Hamburg or pseudo mark?

The color looks a bit pewter to me, but it definitely resembles the 17th century Hamburg marks. I appreciate any help.
It looks like pewter to me too, most likely.
There are many ways to distinguish silver from pewter.
Try one.

The writing BSG doesn't seem very Italian from the 1700, it could have been made later.

Re: ID silver (?) XIX century (?) mark two crossed scepters under crown with A(?)

Hi Tomasz I'm glad you were interested in my article. I, and others too maybe, would be interested to know if you have found out whether your statue is solid silver or silverplate. Furthermore,if you don't mind, it would be a great gift for me if you posted a well-focused photograph of the pseudomar...

Re: ID silver (?) XIX century (?) mark two crossed scepters under crown with A(?)

Hi wozniaks The mark you show, mimics that of the 19th century Papal State. It is visibly fake, but this does not mean that the object is not made of silver. You can also find pseudomarks on good quality silver artefacts. For more details on Italian pseudo-marks see here https://www.925-1000.com/for...

Re: Potential silverplate: B, Fleur-de-lis, G, unknown image

Thanks for your image. I can add a clarification: the first letter of the assayer's mark is not a B but a Z interwined with a P (Zuan Piero) Below is a well-struck example. https://i.postimg.cc/dQ99bDxB/zuanpiero.jpg As I said it is easy to find fakes, below is an example, unfortunately of one of my...

The absence of marks on the foot is not necessarily proof of a fake.
What's inside the red circle, is it just a decoration?

Re: Potential silverplate: B, Fleur-de-lis, G, unknown image

Hi Bertie Your object is an incense vessel of typical Venetian shape. The mark with the lis flower is that of the "sazador" (assayer) Zuan Piero Grappiglia (second half of the 18th century, until 1802, according to Pazzi's book) The other mark is a "moleca", hallmark of the Venic...
