Ice cream spoons? J.E. Caldwell retailer; possibly Sharp?
This set of 12 bright cut twist handle spoons is marked for "J.E. Caldwell & Co." which I understand was a high end retailer in Philadelphia and not the maker. I cannot identify the pattern. When we bought the set in 2002 we were told that this pattern is generally attributed to George...

Re: Revolutionary coin silver knife, perhaps? Family lore...
Thanks for replying so quickly. I will note the mid-1700s time period and will keep a lookout for similar pieces for comparison.

Revolutionary coin silver knife, perhaps? Family lore...
This forum has been so helpful that I am throwing this one in the ring. My grandfather's notes indicate that this is a Revolutionary War era knife, coin silver, and yet it has no marks whatsoever. He thought it was the oldest item in his collection. The blade is worn but still quite sharp; the haft ...

Re: WS = W. Sobey? Help in identifying Exeter marks
This explains so much, and now I understand the sections in Wiley's which are devoted to "Exeter Plate", "Chester Plate", and why they all show the lion passant. My grandfather has also written parenthetically that these were sterling, so he was on the right track. He collected A...

WS = W. Sobey? Help in identifying Exeter marks
I have two identical mustard spoons marked WS and date mark "p", Lion passant, three castle towers for Exeter, and the sovereign head. I find a W. Sobey in Wiley's (p. 184), but I am not sure if this is Exeter Plate or Sterling. Wiley's has it under Exeter Plate, but the lion passant leads...

J. Smart = John Smart, Philadelphia?
I have 6 fruit spoons with this mark for J. Smart. I am having trouble identifying the maker. Kovels has a John Smart (c.1839-1850), Philadelphia, with no illustration of the mark. I cannot find any other reference in Rainwater, Ensko, Green, or Wiler, nor in this forum. Admittedly, my editions are ...

Trev, Thank you, not only for the detailed reply, but also for directing me to a section of the website which I had not explored yet. I really appreciate your thorough follow-up. Gratefully, Pamela

Re: Lewis Samuel on Stuffing spoon - Needing help with marks
Mystery solved! And so quickly, too. Thank you. If you will permit me a follow-up: I have now looked at numerous marks for Hutton & Sons. So, the triangle-shaped mark with the outward-rolled top tips stands for "Angle Plate" and it is an electroplating process? If the "W" is ...

Lewis Samuel on Stuffing spoon - Needing help with marks
I have a stuffing spoon marked on the back of the handle: "LEWIS" over "SAMUEL" in one intaglio mark; then "W" in a circle, three marks in rectangles which I cannot identify, and "P" in a shield. I am not even sure that this is silverplate as it was in a large...
